Web Standards Design - XHTML, CSS and Accessibility

All of the websites which I develop are written entirely in xHTML 1.1 (the latest web standard) and CSS. The combination of xHTML and CSS ensures that the website is future proof, quick loading, search engine friendly and easily customisable.

There are many benefits to using xHTML and CSS (Web Standards), including:

  • Search Engines
Ensuring compliancy with web standards gives your website greater visibility in web searches. The structure of a standards compliant website makes it easy for search engines to access and evaluate the information, therefore they get indexed more accurately.
  • Accessibility
Accessibility is one of the main ideas behind many web standards. Not only does this allow the web to be used by people with disabilities, but also allowing websites to be understood by people using browsers other than the standard ones - i.e. voice browsers, Braille browsers, mobile phone browsers, teletext displays, and other unusual output devices.
  • Stability
Web standards are designed with forward compatibility as the main focus. Using old versions of the standards will continue to work in new browsers websites that use new versions of the standards will 'degrade gracefully' to produce an acceptable result in older browsers.
